Hey it’s time to get those applications to SMAK! We have received some already but as school winds down for the summer and you are thinking about a summer job make sure you do not get shut out by sending a late application. Our bus pick up stops this year have changed. We will stop for workers in the following towns for the summer of 2018.  LeMars, Merrill, Hinton, Sioux City , South Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff and possibly Sloan. There will be multiple pick up spots in Sioux City. We will no longer go to the outlying areas of Woodbury county.

Also this year we are requiring that workers send in a complete new application with all the identifications and I-9 included. Requirements at the Company that we detassel for have changed and we are now required to do this.

In early JUNE we will be posting names of people who are ready to work for SMAK this summer. Keep checking right here for updated information.

SUMMER OF 2018

APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR THE SUMMER OF 2018

All you need to do to have a fun and high paying job in July of this summer is send a completed application to SMAK Incorporated. Once you do that you can plan on working for us.  Do you like working outside in the sunshine? Do you like meeting new friends? Do you like eating picnic lunches? Do you like an occasional walk in the rain? Do you like doing a fair days work for a fair days pay? If so you need to get an application filled out and sent to us. Then just keep checking this page in June and July for all the information that you will need to start working.

Now is the time to get that application to us.

Getting Ready For The 2018 Season

There are a few supplies that you could round up that will assist you in having a safe and successful work experience in July with SMAK. The first is an old but reliable pair of great fitting tennis shoes. These have proven year after year to be the best kind of shoe that ties up and stays on your feet even in muddy conditions, They are lightweight and cause the least stress on your leg muscles too. Other shoes that tie on will work but used tennis shoes are the best. Flip flops and sandals absolutely will not work in a cornfield and you must have shoes on to step in a cornfield. Your old tennies will probably be shot at the end of the season but the good news is that you will have earned enough money to get a brand new pair!!!!!

The next supply would be some type of rain gear. Plastic garbage bags turned upside down with head and arm holes poked in them work great and many of our workers use them. You just have to have them with you in order to be able to use them. Rain coats and pants also work if the are thicker to resist tearing when rubbing against corn stalks.

A lightweight and light colored hooded sweatshirt will be used more than you think while detasseling. Black or another dark color will attract heat and cause your body to heat up faster so a light color is much better.Mornings at 6:30 can be cool some days and it is helpful to have that extra layer that can be taken off when it warms up.

A small personal food cooler will keep your lunch safe and ready to eat when we stop for a mid morning break. A water cooler will keep your water safe too.

Bring water for yourself. If you intend on carrying personal water in the field make sure that the container can be attached to you without having to carry it in your hands as you work. You must have two hands available to detassel properly. We do want you to have your water cooler in your row when you start so that it is right there when you finish your row.

Even though it looks hot it is best to keep the majority of your skin covered while detasseling. In reality it causes you to sweat and actually keeps you cooler.. Caps, pants and long sleeved shirts accomplish this. You will avoid sun burn and corn rash too!!!

We do have a few of these supplies on hand in the field for emergency use if something happens to yours but of course it is best to be prepared yourself.
